The Only Card Game To Take On Holiday This Year
Exploding Kittens has become a bit of a phenomenon since it was launched a couple of years ago. It features on our list of Games For Christmas. It’s a family-friendly game (not to be confused with Cards Against Humanity which definitely is not) for 2-5 players from 7 years+. It is an Amazon best-seller and scores 4.5 stars from nearly 1000 reviews on the site.
Thwart the exploding kittens
Basically, you take turns to pick cards. All the cards have instructions and actions. The game jogs along until an exploding kitten is drawn. There are various ways to defuse the explosion but if you don’t have the right card, you’re out. It’s quite a quick game so no-one is left floundering for too long.
Here’s what one Amazon reviewer said last year:
“We have a 9 and 11 year old and wanted them to get them something to draw their gaze away from a screen for 5 mins. Exploding Kittens is a very simple game which our kids love, simple to get the rules of, very easy to transport (is good for taking on holidays) There are tactics in play, there is backstabbing in play. It only takes 10-15 mins to complete which means that the people who go out don’t have to wait ages to get back into a new game. The artwork is childish and fun, it doesn’t really add anything to the game, but my two loved it.
Exploding Kittens Expansion Set
There is now an Expansion Set so you can include more players. Also includes the very funny “Cone of Shame” and imploding kitten cards. Click the image to see more details*.
“If you like the original, then this is a great little expansion. The main things this brings is the imploding kitten and the reverse cards with optional cone of shame.Love the cone of shame – though I think some people got things wrong on purpose just so they could wear it. Basically if you go out of turn you wear the cone of shame to show which direction play is going. The big improvement though is the imploding kitten. It’s really cool to see the impending doom coming for someone. First time I played I had 2 defuse in my hand and was on course for winning – but that imploding kitten! It got me. So no matter how safe you think you are, it can still shake up the game.”
Exploding Kittens Is A Bit Like GUBS
Exploding Kittens reminds me of GUBS with lots of the action and instructions cards being very similar indeed. We got GUBS from the US and have been taking it on holiday for the last four or five years. There’s also something of the UNO about it.
I like the humour – they tell us the box “…like 99.99% of boxes, does not meow”.
